Law BookYou must first take CBT and hold a Certificate of Completion (DL196) if you are:

1. Aged 16 years and upwards, hold a Provisional Licence and want to ride a moped (up

to 50cc and a maximum design speed of 30mph). You must still display 'L' plates and

    all learner restrictions apply.
2. Aged 17 years and upwards, hold a Provisional Licence or a Full Car Licence, and want     to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc with maximum power of 14.5bhp. You must display 'L'     plates and all learner restrictions apply.
3. A new Full Car Licence holder having passed the car test after 1st February 2001

and  want to ride a moped. (Full Car Licence holders who passed the test before 1st

February 2001 may ride a moped without taking CBT and need not display 'L' plates)

                                                                  4. Considering taking a Full Licence test.

Note for Provisional Licence holders:

If you are aged 17 or over, please check that your licence includes Category 'A' entitlement if you want to ride up to a 125cc machine. Before attending the Practical element of the test you must first pass the Theory Test.

If you are:

Aged 17-20 you may only take your test on a machine up to 125cc (14.5bhp). After having passed the Test you are then restricted to riding a motorcycle that does not exceed 33bhp for a period of two years, after which you may ride any machine of your choice. If you reach the age of 21 before the end of the two year qualifying period, you will be permitted to take a Direct Access course (as detailed below) to upgrade your licence early. This is called Accelerated Access.

Aged 21+ you may take a restricted licence as detailed above or, if you wish, you have the option of taking the Direct Access route. This means your test (and, of course, a substantial amount of your training) will be taken on a machine exceeding 46.6bhp (approx 500cc).> Having passed the test you will then be allowed to ride an unlimited machine immediately.

Important:

Please be aware that since 1st February 2001 all licence holders must take the Theory Test before being allowed to take the Practical element. We are happy to arrange your Theory Test for you as part of your course. If you book your own Theory Test it is important that you ask for a Motorcycle Theory Test, and on arriving at the designated test centre, that you ensure that you are given a Motorcycle Test. Please also check that your pass certificate states you have passed in Category 'A'.
